80% of all U.S. companies now offer non-traditional / flexible work arrangements. In addition to that, remote work, or telecommuting, in particular has grown 103% in the last 10 years.  In keeping with that idea, the CareNational staff wanted to dedicate a series of blogs to the idea of these non-traditional arrangements, and the pros and cons that face the individual employee, as well as the challenges that arise to effective management.

The team here at CareNational is grateful for all the hard work and compassion demonstrated by all healthcare workers everywhere, every day. And while we work with both clinical and non-clinical professionals in health care services roles, since it is National Nurses Week we especially wanted to express our gratitude to all the wonderful nurses (LPNs/LVNs, RNs, and NPs) who work in our specialized niche of Medical Management, or Managed Care. In many ways our work here is its own reward, as we get to partner with nursing professionals looking to grow their careers in the fields ofCase ManagementUtilization Management,  Quality Management, and Reimbursement Management.

Working in Medical Management, we often receive contract or contract-to-hire positions (sometimes called temporary or “temp” jobs.  We search for the right talent for these positions in clinical nursing roles, such as Case Management, Utilization Review, and Quality Improvement, as well as supporting roles for Allied and Administrative functions such as claims, member services, or coding positions.  When recruiting on these opportunities, we often hear from candidates that they will only look at direct-hire (or permanent) placement positions and they would rather NOT be contacted regarding a “temporary” opportunity.

Remote work, also known as TeleCommute or Work-From-Home is a non-traditionally work setting that has virtually swept the nation in the last 2 decades. With technology allowing us to connect in almost every way imagined, why not? Doctors can see and assess patients to a point using TeleHealth / TeleMedicine or web video-casting serves like Skype or FaceTime.  Behavioral Health Counselors can do on-the-spot sessions for patients that have an immediate need or a very difficult schedule.  Case Management and Wellness Nurses can help educate patients over the phone on their plan of care, and eligible benefits.

As a Healthcare Recruiter, my experience dates to a time when resumes from job seekers were received primarily by fax or hand delivered to my office. Similarly, when conveying candidate information to a potential employer, this too was done by fax or couriered to the hiring manager’s office. How the times have changed!

Now that we are firmly in the digital age, more and more job seekers in the healthcare industry are searching, reviewing, and applying for jobs via mobile applications than ever before.  According to Beyond.com, 77% of all job seekers use mobile job search apps.  According to 24% of those job seekers they are going mobile “due to their ability to job search anytime, anywhere.” Another nearly 18% of the same respondents indicated they use mobile job searching as a “discreet way to search for a job.” When the referenced article was published, mobile job seeking had increased by 100% in just two years.

Non-Traditional Work Arrangements and Medical Management Professionals

“Would you consider a position with this Health Plan if you could work from home?  What if there was flexibility on start times, or if you could work 4 x 10-hour days a week?” Of course there is also the reverse side of the same coin:  “You really like this candidate, and she is perfect for your company.  If you allowed even 1 day a week to be Telecommute (or Work-From-Home) I know we could help bring her talent to your team.”

These are excerpts of conversations here at CareNational that happen regularly.  Sometimes we are talking to candidates and trying to help your Managed Care Organization secure the best talent for your open positions.  Other times we are consulting with a hiring manager, like the Director of Healthcare Services, and letting them know the challenges they are facing in the local market which hinder their recruiting goals.  It does not matter if you are speaking with a LPN in Utilization Review or the VP of Medical Management, I guarantee they have an opinion on non-traditional work arrangements.

March Madness is like hiring Medical Management Professionals

Posted by Tom Hasara on Mar 17, 2017 10:53:45 AM

As the nation once again falls victim to the annual and acute affliction of March Madness, I felt inspired by the many correlations to the hiring process. I know that for some, the hiring process may feel more like a surprise game of dodgeball at an anger management retreat than the elegant brackets of the NCAA tournament. But in the clinical and non-clinical Medical Management niche that CareNational specializes in, it often has the appearance of an intense and culminating competition. By the time the best candidates have moved into the final round of interviews, I am emotionally invested in seeing my favorite win that title; much like the Final Four.  I thought I would look at a few other similarities between the landmark collegiate basketball tournament and the recruiting and hiring process for Managed Care professionals in Case Management, Utilization Management, and Quality Management.

Provider Offices and the HEDIS Process

Posted by Tom Hasara on Mar 10, 2017 3:36:50 PM

With H.E.D.I.S. ( Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set) season well under way, CareNational has been very successful in finding qualified nurses and clerical support staff to fill assignments for our clients related to this critically important Quality Improvement audit. We make it our mission to find quality individuals with the appropriate backgrounds to best suit our clients’ needs. When considering a large-scale project like HEDIS, it is important to recognize that it is really a year-round team effort, that requires the support of both the health plan and the contracted network of providers. This week we asked our resident HEDIS expert to answer a common question:   What are some ways a Managed Care Organization can get providers to understand the importance of HEDIS initiatives occurring year round?  Here is what she had to say:
